Abstract With the constant increase of energy costs and environmental impacts, improving process efficiency is considered a priority issue for manufacturing field. A wide knowledge about materials, energy, machinery, auxiliary equipment required in order to optimize overall performance processes. Sustainability needs be assessed find an optimal compromise between technical quality products compatibility In this new Industry 4.0 era, innovative technologies, as additive manufacturing, are taking predominant role. The aim work give insight into how thermodynamic laws contribute at same time improve resources provide methodological support move towards smart sustainable process. context, fundamental step proper design sensing real-time monitoring framework This should based on accurate modelling physical phenomena technological aspects process, account all sustainability requirements. To end, model direct laser metal deposition (DLMD) was proposed test case. Finally, exergetic analysis conducted prototype DLMD system validate effectiveness ad-hoc highlight limitations What emerged that provided significant advantages, since it represents valuable approach finding suitable management strategies identify solutions procedures.
